Rain Perry is set to release A White Album on April 15 via Precipitous Records.
The new LP is the Ojai, CA-based musician’s fifth collaboration with Mark Hallman, who serves as producer and player of most of the instruments, at the Congress House in Austin, TX. Featuring guest appearances by Ben Lee, Akina Adderley, BettySoo, and Wilco’s Mikael Jorgensen, Rain takes a fresh look at her own family history through the lens of race in seven original songs and two covers. Her arresting vocals might remind you a bit of Suzanne Vega.
Perry has collaborated with an impressive array of artists throughout her career including Perla Batalla, Julie Christensen, Matt the Electrician, Eliza Gilkyson, Jon Dee Graham, Danny B. Harvey, Sara Hickman, Chuck Prophet and Victoria Williams.
Big Takeover is pleased to host the engaging single “This Is Water” today, a sweetly melodic, yet contemplative track with thoughtful and nostalgic, yet bittersweet lyrics and guest vocals from beloved musician Ben Lee.
In Rain’s own words, “The second single from the record is “This is Water,” inspired by an old joke that opens an essay by the same name by David Foster Wallace: an older fish swims by two younger fish and asks, “How’s the water?” The two fish look at each other and say, “what the hell is water?” When I think back on the movies and TV I loved as a kid, the history books I read, I realize that I got to see myself reflected in the white faces on screen and on the page. I was a little fish swimming through a white world without even realizing.”
“I’m delighted to have Ben Lee join me on the song, who I first met on the set of the TV show Life Unexpected, where we were both playing ourselves in a music festival episode. Ben is a great guy and devoted activist and I love his duet vocal on “This is Water.”“
