Love As Fiction Records is doing the Lord’s work, or at least the indie rock gods’ work, by finally bringing Glide’s 1995 album, Open Up and Croon, to vinyl. Marking the album’s 30th anniversary, this release is more than just a reissue; it’s a lovingly crafted tribute to a band that left an indelible mark on the Sydney music scene.
For those unfamiliar, Glide was a Sydney-based indie rock outfit formed in 1991, fronted by the late, great William Arthur. Open Up and Croon, produced and engineered by Paul McKercher and Wayne Connolly, was their debut, and it quickly propelled them to tour alongside international acts like Blur and Lush. Glide’s sound, characterized by Arthur’s darkly evocative lyrics and unique harmonies, was a significant force in ’90s Australian music. Sadly, Arthur passed away in 1999, adding a poignant layer to the band’s legacy.
This anniversary edition is clearly a labor of love. The album has been pressed on 180g black vinyl at Suitcase Records in Australia, with the crucial lacquer cut and stamper made at London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios. This attention to sonic detail promises a high-quality listening experience for both long-time fans and newcomers.
But it’s not just about the sound; the visuals are getting a significant upgrade too. The 30th Anniversary artwork has been meticulously restored by Marc Lynch (Glide bassist) and updated for this reissue. Adding even more depth, the release includes a special 8-page color booklet (printed in Australia, along with the jacket) featuring insightful liner notes from two Australian music luminaries: Barry Divola (journalist, author, and musician) and John Tingwell (former editor of Drum Media). This kind of comprehensive packaging truly elevates the reissue from a simple vinyl pressing to a historical artifact.
What’s particularly commendable is the collaborative spirit behind this release. Love As Fiction Records has worked hand-in-hand with the surviving members of Glide, their manager Joe Ryall, and William Arthur’s family, with assistance from APRA AMCOS. This ensures the reissue is not just a commercial venture, but a respectful and authentic celebration of Glide’s enduring impact. Open Up and Croon on vinyl is a must-have for anyone with an appreciation for ’90s indie rock, Australian music history, or simply great songwriting. It’s a chance to rediscover, or discover for the first time, the compelling artistry of Glide and the unique voice of William Arthur.
