There’s a familial tie between literature and songwriting. The good writers know how to tap into that universal human story. It stretches back millennia, from cave paintings to the modern novel. And in that same, glorious tradition, Eddie Seville has released his newest single “S.O.B. Blues.”

Seville’s songs have aired on TV and produced hits for Island, Atlantic, and Universal Records. He’s a producer and player, traveling with the likes of Frank Carillo (Peter Frampton / Tim Hardin), Augie Meyers (Texas Tornados / Bob Dylan), Danny Miranda (Queen). Steeped in country and blues, Seville’s music resonates because it’s honest and clear.

“S.O.B.” blues sounds like a T.C. Boyle novel trapped inside a folk song. Seville sings, “He’s been a problem since he was a kid / but the problem is he never knew what he did.” We’ve all met that one person who just can’t seem to get it together. They’re always in trouble, and when we look at them, we see their confusion, their frustration, and their loss.

Behind Seville’s poignant lyrics is a stirring alt-country arrangement that carries the weight of this lost soul, with its gripping piano and shimmering guitars. In the accompanying video, we see the “son of a son of a bitch” dressed in Día de los Muertos makeup playing guitar, praying, and lighting candles. It’s a visual representation of the titular character’s descent into isolation.

The best poetry is honest. Seville’s language is simple and clear, articulating a story that’s as old as human life itself. And in this age of irony, a little honesty is hard to find. “S.O.B. Blues” is a refreshing reinterpretation of classic literary tropes for this strange new world.
