Every goodbye has a moment when the reality of it finally sets in: the last embrace, the final words, the quiet aftermath when someone is suddenly no longer there. “Slowdance,” the new single from Atlanta dream pop and shoegaze outfit School of Design, exists in that fragile space between holding on and learning how to let go.

“First embrace of this last dance / Before I learn to breathe without you here,” vocalist Samantha Kranz sings as the track blooms around her, capturing the lingering pull of a connection that has already begun to disappear. But while the lyrics trace the ache of separation, the song itself feels expansive and alive, carried by shimmering guitars, cascading synth textures, and a warm, enveloping arrangement that gradually builds toward a soaring three-part vocal harmony.

Following the band’s debut single “After the Warmth,” which introduced School of Design’s emotionally direct songwriting and hazy sonic palette, “Slowdance” feels like a deeper evolution of the band’s sound. The track balances the weight of its subject matter with an immediacy that feels almost effortless, pairing lush atmosphere and textured instrumentation with a chorus that stays with you long after the final note fades.

Formed in 2025, School of Design is the result of longtime friends and music obsessives coming together to create something new. Featuring Kranz alongside Brett Miotti, Dustin Ragland, Luke Thornton, and Matt Turner, the band draws on years of experience across previous musical projects while blending the emotional openness of dream pop and shoegaze with a sharper focus on melody and movement.

Recorded and mixed by Damon Moon at Standard Electric Recorders Co., “Slowdance” was mastered by Simon Scott of Slowdive, whose own work helped define the possibilities of immersive, textural guitar music. After hearing the track, Scott called it “a belter,” noting echoes of The Jesus and Mary Chain and Cocteau Twins, two of his own enduring influences.

For School of Design, the track represents the clearest expression yet of what the band hopes to create: songs that explore the spaces between memory and reality, where heartbreak lingers but beauty remains. Miotti explains that the song’s impact was apparent from the very beginning.

“I think we all knew when we started working on this project together that we would create music we’d be excited about, but with this particular song, the moment we heard Sam’s vocal melody and lyrics, we knew we were onto something special. When it came time to record, she blew us away with that amazing three-part harmony that came together almost like kismet in the studio. It was all first takes, to boot.”

“Slowdance” is the second track from School of Design’s debut double A-side 7” (available now via Bandcamp) and the latest preview of their forthcoming debut LP, due late 2026 or early 2027. The single hits streaming July 8.
