Life, the second LP from Paris ensemble The Salt Collective, continues in the same rich, fizzy vein of janglecrunch guitar pop as the band’s 2019 debut The Loneliness of Clouds, but with a twist. Rather than stick with just a couple of guest artists, guitarist/songwriter Stéphane Schück, bassist Fred Quentin, and drummer Benoit Lautridou threw the doors open to a plethora of friends, peers, and influences, including Matthew Sweet, Julian Hatfield, Richard Lloyd, Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws, Susan Cowsill, Mitch Easter, returning vocalist Anton Barbeau, and all four of the dB’s: Chris Stamey (who doubles as the LP’s producer), Peter Holsapple, Gene Holder, and Will Rigby. The dB’s figure heavily on the latest single “Nursery Rhyme,” a shimmering slice of power pop melody and acid folk atmosphere so winsome you’d swear this comes from the New South, circa 1988.
“This album is a tangible proof, if not scientific, at least emotional, that dreams sometimes come true in life,” declares Schück in the publicity materials. “All the fantastic collaborations on this album are a testament to that.” Sample the dream with the video for “Nursery Rhyme,” sung by Chris Stamey, and co-starring Stamey and Holsapple.
