“Man Up”, the latest release from Austin Willacy, might be a neat slice of alternative pop mixed with a modern dash of conscious soul, but it is more than that too. But what would you expect from the man who toured the world as one of The House Jacks, is actively engaged in bringing musical opportunities to the young, and who advocates for social change as a direct campaigner and more subtly through his music?
This new single is a timely arrival, with Father’s Day around the corner, and is the result of his thoughts and ideas around toxic masculinity and a search for what the opposite of that might look and feel like. And so, “Man Up” is a reminder to other men – fathers, brothers, and sons – to be comfortable pursuing a new kind of male role, one that breaks with the old cliches and which sets a more positive and balanced example of what it means to be a man in the modern age. Forget toxic masculinity; this is a sonic call to arms to embrace sacred masculinity!
And so “Man Up” was born, a stomping, fist-in-the-air anthem to the new patriarchal image. The clever use of space provides the punch, and the music’s minimalism puts Austin’s voice front and center where it deserves to be.
Pop music with a purpose? Power laced with poignancy? Yes, please!
