Maybe it’s the way everything seems to falling apart, all over the world. Or could it be we’re pining for our younger selves. Or perhaps we’re just suckers for Super 8 home movies and a lonesome pedal steel! Whatever it is, this song had us weeping in our beer.
Galway, Ireland-based singer/songwriter Ultan Conlon has a voice, both powerful yet fragile, that some critics have likened to the great Roy Orbison; count us among them! Conlon’s back catalog — two EPs and two full studio albums to date — has received extensive international radio airplay, and inclusion on the award-winning indie film, Songs For Amy (2014). He’s also performed on Irish national television several times.
His most recent offering, Songs Of Love So Cruel, was co-produced and mixed by Colin Elliot (Richard Hawley); it’s been featured on Irish radio and gotten extensive airplay in the UK on BBC Radio 2. The latest single, “In The Mad” reached 68 in the airplay charts, the second highest placed independently released Irish single of that week. It remained on the RTE playlist for five weeks.
Conlon has shared the stage with the likes of John Grant, Eddi Reader, Patty Griffin, and Hawley, and has also performed duets with Glen Hansard and the late John Martyn, the latter of whom recorded one of Ultan’s early works, “Really Gone”, in 2005.
We are right chuffed to be bringing this gorgeous song you today. Keep a hanky handy!
