Sometimes it’s not just enough to get your head around a new music release by an artist you really appreciate. Sometimes their work can even be so cool – texturally, sonically, and lyrically – that you just want to absorb everything they put out. Even more so when the visuals they create to accompany (or accentuate) their music are great. Fortunately, there exists such artists like Rachel Mason, who rolls all of these elements into one nice comprehensive package of sound and vision through what can be called performance art-music with a twist.
A few weeks back, Mason released her Das Ram LP via Los Angeles-based Cleopatra Records, which was preceded by the release of two singles Tigers in the Dark and Heart Explodes.
Now Mason presents “Roses” and we are pleased to bring you the premiere of the new off-kilter video for this track, produced and directed by Los Angeles-based artist team BeckandCol. They also contribute costumes and choreography, while Mason is the master of masks, one of the hallmark features of her live shows.
The track “Roses” itself, produced and co-written by Jeff Hassay, is a powerful anthem and perhaps Rachel Mason is at her top performance level here showcasing her particular gusto and positively loaded drive.
In the video, BeckandCol uses humor and chaos to investigate the crisis of human exceptionalism. “Their work explores alternate universes populated with monsters, who obsess over humanity and emulate its dominant attributes,” explains Rachel Mason. “Their monsters resist any classification built on hierarchy or a merely binary opposition and instead exposes hierarchical behaviors as absurdities, forcing a rethinking of social and cultural norms.”
Mason met BeckandCol at a concert at HM157, where she was performing with her band. They approached after seeing her perform with elaborate costumes and dancers and immediately a creative conversation ensued. Mason looked at their work and found kinship with their ideas and aesthetic, so they recently began to work together on live performances and are producing more work as part of a Mason’s new project, which is being pursued as part of her residency at Los Angeles’ prestigious Hammer Museum.
