Flocke, an indie chamber-pop band, is the project of Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Nicole Mercedes. Originally from Los Angeles, in the late 90’s she moved with her family to Israel. where she played in several bands and tried out different musical genres as a teen. In 2012, Nicole recorded her first record, All the Windows, an exploration of lo-fi sounds and home recording influenced by artists like Destroyer and Smog. Nicole toured Europe with the self-released album and lived in Berlin for a few months before returning to the States to find a new home in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
Flocke started when Nicole, inspired by film soundtracks and classical music, wanted to explore making more lush-sounding music, incorporating semi-orchestral arrangements into light pop songs. She teamed up with guitarist and long-time band mate Daniel Roth (Milan to Minsk) and drummer Aaron Mendelson (Isadora), using loopers and lo-fi keys to create a unique-sounding live performance. Flocke’s debut album, Bye Polar Bear, was recorded with friend and producer Joe Rodgers (The Shivers, Kelli Scarr) and will be released on Friday.
