There is a fantastic, not to mention important, message to be found within the lyrics of “Rock Bottom”, the lead single from Faith Marie’s new ep, More Than I Am. Written from personal experience, it reminds us that sometimes when everything around you seems to be falling apart, it is okay to let them. It is okay to let plans falter, for the very fabric of life to unravel, to fail. Because it is only when you find yourself on more solid ground that you can regroup and find a new path. You often realize that such a strategic retreat was necessary to move forward. And, quite reassuringly, when that happens, the only way is up.
Musically, it reminds me of the spirited sound with which Lily Allen made her name. But, whereas lyrically, at least, her words seemed more shallow and throwaway, Faith Marie has managed to find the perfect marriage between pop hook and lyrical depth. It is a fine line to walk, but she does it deftly and confidently. When did pop get so grown up? When did pop get so smart?
