Kicking off with the title track, a celebration of living in the moment, this opening salvo sets out Aaron Koenig’s album with a bang made of classic rock and roll riffs driving through a contemporary rockscape. But whilst this might be an Aaron Koening signature sound, as the album proves, he has many such identifiable sonic fingerprints. A genre-hopping artist, if ever there was one.
Ironically, it is the free-spiritedly named “Crazy & Wild” that marks the first of many changes of pace, advocating being yourself and not following convention, letting free the inner child, even when, especially when that inner child is not so young anymore, is a funky, acoustic blues piece that shifts down a gear after more rcok driven energies.
Similarly, “Artificial Minds” is a flamenco-infused, Mediterranean acoustic-pop piece that warns us of the dangers of future technology, of creating a world where all the things that make us human, such as art and expression, individuality and personality, have been replicated by binary brains. By contrast, “Geeks” is a ska-infused celebration of those brainiacs that many of us looked down on at school, the very same brainiacs who might one day be responsible for the above scenario. But let’s not judge them just yet, they might actually be the answers to all our prayers! And then, “Music is Magic” is a Latin-grooved tribute to the power of music as a whole.
What I love about Koenig’s music is that no matter what his subject matter, he finds the good in everything. His is a musical world of optimism and silver linings, hope and celebration, and, lord knows, we need more of that attitude and mindset in the world.
