Like a gothic Scott Walker Fernando Honorato takes those classic, crooner-style vocals that defined the chamber-pop sounds of an earlier era and welds them onto slow and sonorous, atmospheric, and anthemic post-punk soundscapes. Not only does he do this, but he does it 10 times over to give us a sumptuous debut album, Center Of Your World.
Having trailed this with two great singles, he has already built up considerable anticipation. “A Million Times” displays the more beat-driven, groove-oriented, warmer, dance-infused side of his music, the album’s title track showing us the grander and more operatic cool (in every sense of the word) side of his creative skills, with tracks like “More of You” somehow reveling in both of these opposite yet attractive aspects.
Elsewhere, “Lady In Black” is a slow and sophisticated weave of sonic shade and shimmering shadow. “Crystal” seems to pulse away as if we are hearing it from the other side of a nighttime city, and “In My Dreams and in My Heart” is both deftly orchestrated and delicately delivered.
If you have been keeping up with his single releases, Center Of Your World is everything that you expected and more. It is a beautiful and creative collision of grandeur and groove, grace and melody, the past and the present, analog artistry, and digital delicacy. Perfect for those who can remember the heady days of post-punk but also for those younger yet equally discerning music fans looking for something new to sink their teeth into.
