Timing is everything. Sometimes, a good idea, and indeed a great song, has to wait for its day in the sun, the perfect moment to hit the cultural and collective spot. And such is the case here. “Everybody Bleeds” might have sat on the shelf for 14 years, but not only does its sonic chops feel perfect for today, but its lyrical sentiment also has never felt so relevant in today’s fast-paced and overburdened world.
Themed around thoughts of vulnerability and (dis)connection, if the narrative is a personal story, it is universally relatable and, sadly, its sentiments are increasingly relevant.
And if the song is a lyrical revelation, musically, it sees Alwyn Morrison shake up his signature sound, too. Pushing into rawer, rock ‘n’ roll territory (and, for us Brits, with a hint of a certain Brit-pop band vibe running through the back of the song), this is the sound Morrison cutting loose and going big.
He has always had a neat way of blending music that feels intimate with bigger soundscapes; here, he pushes such clever juxtapositions even further, the song simultaneously bigger, broader, deeper, more exploratory, wonderfully anthemic, and powerfully poignant. But despite this upscaling of his sound, it is still a song built on his trademark blend of instant accessibility and smart arrangement.
Or, put another way, it is big and it is clever.
