Alwyn Morrison - The City (self-released)

20 January 2025

Songs are as individual and varied as the people who write them; no one sound or style, approach nor attitude is the right way to create a successful song. But many of the best songs have one thing in common: one thing that drives them into the consciousness of the potential fan. Groove. Again, this mystical property can be woven from any number of different musical parts, but a song has either got it, or it hasn’t. It is fair to say that “The City” has groove and plenty of it.

Alwyn Morrison creates his particular rhythmic addictions through slashes of staccato guitar, shuffling drum beats, a great on/off energy, and a lilting feeling, all of which, when taken together, make for an irresistible vibe, one that has me just swaying along even as I’m trying to write this.

“The City” is a cool song, one that is all things to all people. Pop pickers will love its infectiousness. Rockers will dig the guitar breaks, and indie kids will get high on its seductive and deftly wrought qualities. And then, anyone who likes relatable lyrics can’t help but fall for this love letter to New York City, a prose paean with a whole dose of honesty running through it, like a modern-day take on Ryan Adams iconic “New York, New York.” And as references go, that isn’t one that I throw about lightly.
