It is always interesting to see where songwriters draw their inspiration, writing cues, and song ideas are all around us, but, in my opinion, any song that owes its existence to the words and sentiments of none other than Bill Hicks is a song to take notice of. Similarly, Blofeld Sands the band behind it, rides high in my estimation merely because of this. Hicks people are my sort of people.
Hicks told us to “‘Love All The People,” and that is precisely the sentiment that “People” aims to promote. It is a song of unity, understanding, empathy, and love in this ever-darkening and entrenched world in which we find ourselves.
But, of course, a song is more than just a worthy sentiment, more than just optimistic lyricism; a song is at least fifty percent music; one without the other doesn’t cut the mustard, as they say. Thankfully, this debut single is a gorgeously shimmering slice of indie-rock, a chiming and indeed charming sonic experience that borders on the dreamier fringes of shoegaze whilst holding its own in indie’s sonic waters.
It is pretty telling that this is the second song I have had under the pen today that talks of optimism, love, and weathering the storm, another song that offers a sonic beacon in the darkness and is a mantra for togetherness and understanding. Telling because on this day of all days, the inauguration of a certain US president, musicians seem to be at pains to remind us that not everything has to be as dark as it might potentially seem, not if we, the people, don’t want it to be.
