With her new album, Battle Cat about to drop, Andra Suchy paves the way with the wonderfully 50’s infused, gospel-vocalled slice of indie-blues-rock. And you know that you are on to something good when the writer trying to sum things up has to resort to such long-winded generic tags.
And, given that multi-hyphenated moniker, “Born To It” is a relatively spacious and straightforward song. The resonant twang of the guitar certainly evokes the early days of rock and roll, but for the most part, the song struts through a modern landscape, albeit taking an alternative, off-the-beaten-track path, perhaps, but modern nonetheless.
“Born To It” is a gorgeous balance of understament and punch; space is the key here, turning those guitar riffs into stacatto growls, the beats into a finely tooled tattoo march, all of which allows those squalling lead lines to move as if unteathered and meander in directions of their own choosing and Suchy’s voice to dance and dart deftly and dexterously over the top.
How could you not listen to this slice of contemporary retro rock and roll, if that isn’t even a contradiction in its own right, and not immediately go searching for the album? And isn’t that precisely what you need in a single to do?
