Well, that comes in with a bang! And why not? Surely, any single worth its salt wants to grab the listener’s attention right from the word go, and “Here Comes Morning” certainly does that. Just four singles in, but this Manchester, UK trio sounds like they have been doing this forever and without breaking a sweat.
If indie-rock, as the name suggests, should be the perfect blend of indie attitude and rock weight, of easy melody and endless groove, then Atlas Rivers make music at that ideal point of collision. They blend the big with the clever and do so effortlessly. While this is a song built on epic guitars, thundering drums, bass lines that are both energetic and occasionally infused with brilliantly mellifluous runs and searing vocals, this is more than just low-slung guitar thrashing.
While being anthemic at that end-of-the-set, last-song-of-the-festival sort of way, there is an ornateness to the song, too. Beat patterns groove in all directions, guitars are raw and epic yet spacious, and the bass is melodic and rhythmic, that crucial bridge between back beat and melody.
This song, which reminds us to revel in whatever moments of joy and beauty we find, however fleeting, is excellent. It outmaneuvers pop for infectiousness, outperforms rock in terms of sonic weight, and outguns indie for swagger, grit, attitude, and any other metric you care to choose.
It is a chart-friendly song and a mainstream marvel, and song that will draw fans and followers from across the musical spectrum.
