Too sophisticated to be rock, too clever to be pop, too original to be labelled merely indie, Betty Moon sits in one of those unique and rarefied spaces that is not only hard to put a generic tag on but which contains only the artist in question – the same sort of spaces where you would find artists such as Bjork or Lady Gaga. (Not sonically, but certainly in regards to attitude, aptitude and approach.)
Taken from her latest EP Strangely Beautiful, her first original release since 2021’s Cosmicoma, “Want Me To” acts as the perfect lead single, a calling card, sonic sampler, and reminder why we need Betty Moon in our lives.
Running on brooding and sultry rhythms, “Want Me Too” is both addictive and understated, a sonically seductive slice of chilled dance, shot through with beguiling guitar breaks and musical atmospheres, and creating an interesting dynamic by deftly layering up the sound very slightly and then shedding sonic skin to get back to the shaded heart of the music.
And then there is Moon’s marvellous and mellifluous voice – sensual and serene whilst being confident and commanding…. nothing short of mesmerizing! If this is pop, it is pop for the more mature and discerning music fan, pop with poise and poignancy, pop with power and perfection, pop with a PhD! It’s great to have her back.
