Brendan McKinney & the 99 Brown Dogs - Fashion Magazine (self-released)

6 May 2025

How does Brendan McKinney manage to sound simultaneously like every superb sound from the past, the perfect antidote for our current lowest common denominator music scene and the ushering in of a bright new future for music? Damn, he’s a one-man sonic messiah!

“Fashion Magazine,” a taste of his album to come, Skin a Cat, is funky and soulful and infectiously pop, but pop by a much older definition. Guitar licks and drums create a neat groove, pianos add sonic color, the sound of brass breezes through the gaps, and if you are trying to work out what that big, hooky, in-your-face sound is that you can’t seem to pin down, its a fuzzed-up, filled-out, full-of-attitude bass line being used in ways that most bands couldn’t even contemplate.

It’s an effortlessly cool song that has wandered the musical landscape, past and present, hopped genres, mined sonic seems and ripped up any number of rule books, searching for all the best bits of popular music, gathering them together, and putting them together in new and inventive ways.

The result is a song about the simple pleasures in life, dreams of the high life, and an overall life’s-too-short ethos celebration, and I challenge anyone to listen to this and not realize that…

1. Music has lost its way; it used to be much cooler.
2. Brendan McKinney is your new favorite artist.
3. We must stop worrying about stuff and just concentrate on absorbing all the fun out of life.
4. We all want to ride aimlessly about in a coffee-colored limousine.
5….err…that’s all I got!
