Having teased the audience and tested the water with a couple of intriguing singles, namely “Choppy” and “Walls,” there was only one thing left for Berlin duo Circolo Vizioso to do, that is, drop a whole debut album of mercurial and marvellous music on the discerning audience.
And discerning is the right word. There isn’t anything about Verrückt that will sit comfortably with the more mainstream music aficionados and chart-orientated pop-pickers. But this was never for them. It was always for those who like the odd and the intriguing, the eclectic and exploratory, to be factored into their music.
Taking such underground and unusual reference points as the 70s krautrock sound, the New York no-wave scene, alternative rock (and I mean really alternative, not just the designer label sporting kids with complicated haired who have usurped the label), and post-punk in general, they deliver six tracks that are all about making music on the outside track. Or, more likely, a track so far out that is only visible from the outside track.
Anyone who likes the abrasiveness of Sonic Youth, the angst and anger of Nirvana, the unique creativity of Shellac, the musical genre juggling of The Pop Group, or just has a hankering for the underground sound in general, will find lots to love here.
