I love Rick Harkness’s resilient rock-and-roll vision. Not for him a complicated or convoluted mission to rebuild the genre. There is no year zero agenda, no attempt to mix and merge it with other sounds and styles to force it to evolve too quickly. No, this is the sound of someone who understands that rock and roll has already found its near-perfect form, that most of the heavy lifting has already been done. All he has to do is give it a quick polish with an oily rag and move it gently into the modern age.
And so, “Bring It On” is the sound of classic rock merely moving with the times, running on the requisite blends of swagger and speed, grit and groove, power and punch. He slams one foot down on the monitor, raises one fist in the air (not easy if you are trying to play the guitar, but that’s how good he is), and fires off salvos and riffs at his discerning and delighted target audience. Guitars roar, drums pound, bass lines power through, and you will be singing the chorus before it’s even two lines in.
It is glorious. It’s the sort of music that has been the soundtrack to all those parties and gigs, road trips and encounters, incidents and adventures that made you who you are. Slightly nostalgic and yet powered with forward momentum.
In the grand scheme of things, it might not change your life, but it sure as hell might change your night…for the better.
