CS Hellmann - In A World Gone Wrong (self-released)

16 June 2024

The song’s title might make you think that this is a tune laden with doom and despondency, just one more anthem to the darker side of life. But you know what they say about books and covers; that is equally true of songs and their titles. Although “In A World Gone Wrong” takes as its backdrop those times when life throws you a curveball, when everything seems to fall apart, and when you can’t see what your way out might be, it is actually full of hope and optimism.

Here, CS Hellmann talks about those glimmers of light at the end of the tunnel, of finding the first step back to what your life used to be, or better still, to a new one altogether. This song is not about darkness but about seeing the light, a song which typifies the old adage, “It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.”

Blending a dream-pop drift with an ambient, post-rock drive, his vocals float over a mesh of guitars, but guitars that have been rendered into an ethereal state and accompanied by a beat whose only job seems to tether the song rather than drive it.

This is the sound of optimism being rendered into song, the sound of dreams being allowed to grow, an anthem to dignity in dark times, a song of grace under pressure, and a reminder that if you want the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain. But the rain always passes.
