Somewhere at the collision point of post-punk instrumentals, post-rock soundscaping, ambient sonic drifting, and cinematic soundtracking, you find “Adventus,” the new one from Deep Dive Species. And it is a pretty remarkable piece of music.
The way that it absorbs the harshness of the guitar shards and resonant growl into a beautiful blend of melodic bass lines and beguiling electronica is quite extraordinary, the sound of opposites attracting, not only attracting but giving birth to a sonic progeny that is more than the sum of its parts.
There is something genuinely graceful in the music, something lush and sonically lyrical. The balance of disparate and different sounds, from the mellifluous to the metallic, the grand to the groovesome, makes the piece sound more like a modern symphony than a song in the traditional sense.
So, we find ourselves in this futuristic soundscape; one built of very recognisable and familiar building blocks yet one that feels like a taste of things to come. Is this what is known as retro-futurism? The sound of the past looking for its future self? If so, “Adventus” is part of that quest for sonic identity—the musical shape of things to come.
