“You’re late to the party” so the chorus of Def Nettle’s latest track goes. The story of my life, but at least I’m bang on time writing about this freakishly fun release on the day it drops. “The Party” shimmers with echoes of classic 80’s new wave meets polished pop, you know, when pop was a highly regarded form rather than the style-over-substance dross it seems to have become, where there are more producers involved in the song than actual words in it. Think The The, think Prefab Sprout. And this lyrically astute slice of poised pop is, in turn, driven by heavy bass lines and danceable beats, not so much a dance record but certainly everything that dance records should aspire to.
And then there is the small matter of the remix, Glok the hand behind it is none other than Ride’s Andy Bell, and he opts to replace the brooding guitars which give the song its original dynamic, with even heavier basses and glitchy beats – analog artistry being transposed into digital deftness – and deftly and deliciously done.
Whichever version you opt for – not that you have to make a choice, this is one of those times where you can have your sonic cake and eat it too – this piece of near-perfect underground pop-punk-funk-groove is both brilliantly clever and instantly infectious…without wanting to resort to cliches, it is big, and it is clever…he said, resorting to cliches.
Just buy it, you’ll thank me later. Actually, you’ll thank me immediately!
