Downtown Patriots - All My Life (Maisola Records)

29 August 2024

“All My Life” is proof that rock music doesn’t have to be fast and a good use of loud to make the listener notice. You will catch more people’s attention with groove and infectiousness than straight-out volume and velocity. In fact, I know this to be the case because it’s precisely what Downtown Patriots are doing here.

While other rock bands might be happy making an undignified rush for the end of the song to somehow prove …well, I’m not sure what they are trying to prove…Downtown Patriots prefer to groove and grind along, bounce and boogie, swagger and saunter their way towards the final chords, and in doing so, appear cool and controlled rather than fraught and frenzied.

“All My Life” is a love song, lyrically certainly, a song of celebration of the significant other in the narrator’s life, but musically, it still follows some classic rock traditions, ones that have, admittedly, gone a bit off-grid, off-track, off-message, ricocheted off a tsunami of grunge and garage rock and punk energies coming the other way, and returned from the quest suitably raw and raucous, well-traveled and full of attitude.

Driven by nonchalant, low-slung riffs and barbed rhythms, propulsive bass, and unfussy yet brilliantly functional drums (as all drums should be), this is what happens when you take a soupçon of all contemporary rock styles and let them marinate, meld, pool, and percolate together. It might not be pretty but it is damned near perfect!
