DRUNKSOULS is a reggae group hailing from where other than Marseille France. Honestly, I can’t say I’ve ever heard French reggae before now, and I was extremely hesitant that the two seemingly different worlds would blend at all. However, the band has amazingly managed to craft their own take on the genre, and in fact, it ends up being a perfectly acceptable and enjoyable sound.
DRUNKSOULS have released a new CD, Just Before Chaos, a compilation of previously released tracks intended for international release. Yes, it’s influenced largely by reggae, but it may not even be fair to call it pure reggae, because it really is more pop with an infusion of reggae than anything else. Songs like “Human Race” are undeniably ska, but often others such as “J’ai fait un rêve” have nary a trace of reggae to be found. There is as much pop, funk, and dance music to their sound.
Quite simply, DRUNKSOULS are the kind of band that makes exactly the type of music you would think they’d make from the sound of their name: a good listen while having a drink at a backyard BBQ or any laid-back social gathering. It’s nothing that hits you over the head, even if they intend at times to be political or topical, but it is always an immensely enjoyable listen.
