Even today, in the ragged remains and fractured ruins of what we used to call the music press, people are still writing articles with rhetorical, clickbaiting titles, such as “Is guitar music dead?” Firstly, articles like this are the reason why we no longer have a functioning music press. Secondly, no, go and listen to Dude Safari if you want to see where guitar music is today. Of course, one guitar band does not a movement make, but even if they were the only ones of their kind left, they would still manage to satisfy our hankerings for guitar-driven, independent-minded, exciting, indie music.
“Vitamin” is the sound of a strange equation at work, essentially pop + grunge = cool indie music, who knew? Well, Dude Safari, for one. It’s a sound that reminds us that, at its best, i.e., Nirvana, grunge music was just pop music blown out of all proportion: bigger, heavier, louder, driven, incendiary, intense, grittier, but with all the infectiousness, accessibility, and contagion left intact. And that is precisely what we find going on here.
“Vitamin” is a song about those cravings for those things in life that give you a lift, a spark, a jolt, a buzz, even when you know these things might not be the best for you. I feel the same way about songs like this. Is sonic addiction a thing? Are earworms contagious? Can I get my music hit on the NHS? so many questions!
