If pop music is generally shiny, instantaneous and groove-led, and folk music more often leaning towards the rustic, raw and real, then ‘In Your Eyes,’ the new single from Dysmusia, is the product of the middle ground between such sonic forces. The best of both worlds and more than the sum of its parts.
The song’s message might come from a personal and intimate place, but it is one that we can all relate to: that cycle of break up and make up, those relationships where you feel like you have found the perfect partner, but for reasons beyond the tangible, you just can’t hold things together. Oil and water might combine to make beguiling patterns, but they never truly come together as one.
Acoustic guitars are quickly strummed; the momentum drawn from the percussiveness of the right hand’s dexterity rather than the strike of a beat; sonic pace is matched with lyrical poise and poeticism, and despite the coolness of the subject matter, it is a song with real warmth.
Pop-folk in the vein of David Gray, with that ability to work on the more sophisticated side of pop and the more chart-accessible side of roots music, simultaneously. Lovely stuff.
