Eddie Cohn - Keep Them Away (self-released)

16 August 2024

Across a number of singles, such as “Wave Goodbye” and “Who or What I Was Before,” Eddie Cohn has proven that he has that deft way and magic touch that enables him to combine pop’s infectious voice with rock’s restless energy. His latest single, “Keep Them Away,” certainly sees him finding that sweet spot, the perfect counterpoint between the two realms, but perhaps, this time out, he errs more on the side of the harder and heavier side of that sound.

But, it works perfectly, as we knew it would. There is an undeniable drive and energy found at the heart of the song, but it is also graced with drifting guitars and large and lush vocal treatments – a song that is both accessible and incendiary…how cool is that? (Very, that’s the word you were looking for.)

This modern-day anthem not only reminds us that the best music is made in those liminal spaces between genres and sounds and styles and scenes, but it also has something quite poignant to say. It suggests that it is only by shielding ourselves from unnecessary intrusions, extraneous noise and unwanted distractions that we can truly get on with the process of living the life that we want.

Eddie Cohn does it again, and it is a song that will appeal to all quarters. Not because it compromises to please all but because it is made up of all the best bits of several genres, not to mention no small amount of his own ingenuity and artistry.
