Eddy Mann has always walked a wonderfully clever path between the worlds of devotional and secular music. While he has long used the art form to discuss, promote and further his relationship with god, his music has always been accessible to those on other life paths.
While that is still the case here, lyrically, the simple words that make up this spacious song are nothing if not the embodiment of his belief in the most prominent and unambiguous terms yet. And why not? Music itself has evolved from the act of worship, from the lifting of voices in praise, if you trace it far enough back, before the world of ego, celebrity, and the pursuit of fame and fortune took over. Here is someone merely following in the oldest traditions of the form.
“Hallelujah” is the most honest, straightforward and authentic song, written with only one purpose in mind, with its lyrics lilting over simple acoustic guitars and an understated beat with just a slightly more rocked-up crescendo as its final destination.
And why not? Why shouldn’t we have more simple acts of love and devotion in this seemingly ever-darkening world of ours? Even if you hold other beliefs, just having something to hold on to, something beyond the hollow comforts and shallow materialism that many turn to as a distraction or support mechanism, is surely something to be applauded.
It’s almost as if, as Eddy Mann well knows, video games and fast cars, big houses and wallets stuffed with cash weren’t the solutions after all. Maybe the answer is much simpler than that.
