Erik Rabasca - Oh Domination! (Highest Frequency Records)

31 October 2026

Sometimes the simplest musical arrangements provide the most effective platforms for difficult truths; you could even say that, for the best balance, as the poignancy of the message increases, the complexity of its delivery system should lessen. (Just a thought.) With ‘Oh Domination!’, Erik Rabasca strips things back to acoustic guitar and voice, letting his words take centre stage as he tackles timeless yet timely issues like wealth inequality, political division, greed, and the seemingly endless human appetite for conflict.

Recorded live in a single take, without any of the usual studio safety nets, ‘Oh Domination!’ has an unvarnished, old-school protest-song quality. Echoes of the great folk storytellers float through the song, from Woody Guthrie to Bob Dylan to Martin Carthy, though Rabasca brings his own contemporary frustrations to the tradition, perhaps reminding us that the music styles may change and the problems facing us move with the times, but the place where those come together, that is, the protest song, endures.

In the tradition of all great protest songs, a vibrant, unspoken, read-between-the-lines point gets to the heart of the problem: if freedom is about individuality, but unity is the only way to stand up to overreaching authority, how can we ever win against the modern political-corporate machines? But win we must, especially in an age when hatred and division have become the prime weapons of the popularist powers-that-be.

Anger is certainly present in the song, but so is a genuine sense of moral urgency. Rather than dressing its observations in elaborate production, ‘Oh Domination!’ trusts the power of the songwriting and the conviction behind the performance.

In an era when protest music is arguably needed more than ever, Rabasca delivers a timely reminder that sometimes a quiet voice, an understated guitar, and something worth saying speak volumes.
