I’m old enough to remember when bands like Sum 41 and Blink 182 broke the whole pop-punk thing to the world. Which means that I am also old enough to remember when a whole bunch of chancers and wannabes rode their coattails, benefiting from the scene’s commercial momentum that their poor sonic imitations didn’t warrant.
Thankfully, EverWill has always sounded as if, were this music being made back in the day, they would have been part of that original charge for the barricades, rather than those who followed at a safe distance. And “Sure Thing,” their latest single, demonstrates exactly why I make this argument.
It is precision sharp and sonically punchy; the bass both drives and adds to the melodic landscape, and the drums power through not only doing their intended job but also underlining and accentuating the song’s dynamics. Guitars roar, and riff, and the vocals have that essential sing-along-ability.
All of which makes for an anthemic and accessible slice of modern pop-punk molded in the classic vein, and to be fair, if it’s not anthemic and accessible, is it really pop-punk anyway? Discuss.
Existing fans of the genre will love this, older punksters will get the blend of nostalgia and forward-thinking, and discerning fans of all stripes will appreciate the poise, punch, power, and sonic poignancy woven into this song.
The genre never really went away, but could this be the sound of a pop-punk renaissance? Watch this space.
