I have to say that I appreciate the brilliantly named Everything But The Everything’s ability to sound like both the most cutting-edge slice of rock and roll and something I found lurking in the most post-punk depths of my dusty vinyl collection. Familiar sounds that never sound remotely dated, the sound of a band finding the through line between post-punks’ unfinished business and a sound that resonates with the alternative and underground sound of today. That’s how good they are.
A solo project that has coalesced into a band, it is not only Izzy The Gent’s deft songwriting chops that grab you, but the entwined and imploring, beautiful and Banshee-esque vocals of Sophia Prise and Tobias Hawkins that stand out.
Not that the music is secondary, and as you relax into the song…possibly on your third or fourth spin, because it takes that long to stop being totally beguiled by the vocals alone…you appreciate the piercing guitars, the slow funereal beat, the sonic textures and shaded tones that fill out the spaces between beat and breath.
The great thing about “Hollow Heart” is that it shows that as the band has grown, the sound hasn’t changed; well, of course it has, but it has just got bigger, gone deeper, expanded in all directions rather than headed for sonic pastures new. Rather than head for headier heights, “Everything But The Everything” has instead drilled further down into their own signature sound and become more of what they always were.
And the results, as proven here, are fantastic.
