Lottie Gray - Green (self-released)

13 July 2026

I love songs like this, ones that don’t really fit into a genre, not because they don’t adhere to any one set of stylistic rules or shimmer with a familiarity, but because they seem to be playing with the best bits of many different sounds. When you hear the phrase something for everyone, it often alludes to conformity or compromise, not so here, as this is a sound that is (ironically given the subject matter) big and ambitious in its sonic scope.

“Green” is a bit like holding up a gemstone to the light: depending on which way you turn it, a different sonic hue or musical color dances deftly before you. Turn it one way, and the acoustic rock drive becomes dominant; turn it again, and pop accessibility rules; turn it again, and a multi-layered, finessed folk becomes most obvious, and so on.

This third single (and I curse myself for missing the first two) is a real winner, moving from acoustica to anthemic, from folkiness to fiery rock and roll, shifting gears between pop and a hard place in just under five minutes. Lyrically emotive, passionate, and authentic, the song’s themes of jealousy (hence the name) and ambition are palpable in its drive and urgency; the sonic payoff is fantastic, and it is perhaps only in hindsight that, as the final chord rings out, you realize how far you have come.

I also hear echoes of Suzanne Vega occasionally in that big acoustic sound and just half-hidden in the imploring vocal delivery; it’s subtle, but it is there, and that isn’t a bad reference point to have leveled at you, is it?

A brilliant song. I’m now off to educate myself on the previous singles… as should you.
