Remember that feeling of reaching a certain age and realizing there is no hidden secret to being an adult and that we essentially carry on stumbling through life, not knowing what we’re doing, only with increasing responsibility and probably less spare cash? “Next Goal Wins” is an anthem to that revelation.
Palejoy’s brand of grunge-infused, heavy-emo meets shoegaze sound delivers the perfect weight to communicate that feeling of carrying those burdens of adulthood. Guitars build walls of noise through which are threaded sonic salvos and raucous riffs. Drums pummel and push the song along at a leisurely and wonderfully world-weary pace, and the bassline is happy to build additional sonic weight to reinforce the uphill battle that the lyrics discuss. This is a powerful beast indeed.
But there is also an absolute honesty to be found in the song, that idea that understanding that life is a mess, but embracing the chaos anyway, trying to see the good, the hope, the optimism in it all, and living life as best you can. It is, after all, all anyone is doing. “Next Goal Wins” is the understanding that, like the swan analogy, even those who seem to have things together are just kicking like mad below the waterline to merely stay afloat.
