As Flavor Wave heads towards the release of their second album later this year, they are building up the audience’s interest and keeping the discerning music fans on their side with the release of their latest single, “Sad Songs on the Radio.” And it is fair to say that such a song is going to pique the interest of many.
Walking a brilliantly sure-footed fine line between alt-rock’s energy and more dream-pop-infused sounds, between defined melodies and hazy sonics, it sets a scene that most of us will be familiar with. Arguments that occur during car journeys are complicated, or at least the aftermath of them is, those passing minutes of ever-deepening and darkening silence from which the confines of the vehicle allow no physical escape, leaving you both lost in your own thoughts and listening to the titular sad songs on the radio.
The verses jangle and jive with indie rock sonics, increasing in sonic weight each time they return, and the choruses are swathed in a blissful, dream-pop haze, creating the perfect gentle dynamic shift between drive and drift.
And whilst this is indeed a song exploring sadness and regret, reflection and heartache, the neat thing is that Flavor Wave understands that you can talk about such subjects without resorting to the maudlin and the melancholy, and so “Sad Songs on the Radio” is one of those clever songs where the lyrics might pull at heartstrings but the music lifts you up.
Juxtaposition is the name of the game.
