Flock of Indifference - Crashing Together (Planet Gowanus Records)

13 January 2025

Sitting between the brooding creativity of the post-punk sound and the more mainstream accessibility of the alt-rock scene, this three-track EP from the brilliantly named Flock of Indifference is a solid piece of work. Solid not just in the sense of the sound it makes but also in the way that melody and muscle are grafted together robustly.

“Long Goodbye” kicks things off brilliantly with an unfussy, driving groove dressed up with just enough guitar jangle to keep things interesting. The song dynamic ebbs and flows, powers on and off, taking a trick or two from those 90’s college rock bands, and if the main riff does, from time to time, remind me of the Buzzcocks classic two-chord, less-is-more-and-then-some “Ever Fallen In Love,” then that is just a case of their being nothing new under the sun, and especially not in music.

“Green” runs more leisurely, but that slower approach pays dividends, enabling the song to build outwards and upwards and dig deeper rather than just relying on mere volume and velocity. Tone, texture and clever layering are the name of the sonic game. Saving the best for last, “Pivotal Incident” is a neat blend of indie moves and rock grooves, a song bathed in cool guitar lines and spacious vocals.

If you are looking for a band that walks a fine line between post-punk darkness and alt-rock energy, between ornateness and accessibility, between then and now, between past glories and future potential, groove and grit, then Flock of Indifference certainly ticks all those boxes.
