Remember when rock grooved? Remember when it was infectious and immediate? Remember when it wasn’t afraid to blend in a bit of indie cool and even some pop, or at least pop-aware, accessibility? Well, Fools Arcade certainly does, and “So Much Time” is all the proof you need.
The rock realm has become increasingly caught up in making music that seems ever more technical, increasingly heavier, more bombastic, and even macho, making it more niche and gate-keeper-guarded, not to mention juvenile. “So Much Time” is the sound of a fight back.
It might seem as if I’m suggesting rock needs watering down. Nothing could be further from the truth. But what we have going on here is a reminder of all the elements that made rock such a force to be reckoned with in the first place, the sound of rock being boiled down to its very essence. Groove, great riffs, sing-along-ability (that’s a word, right?), a clever blend of power and poise, groove and grit, deftness and drive.
And the band has something universally essential to say too. Not for them songs about wizards or creatures of the night, self-aggrandizement, or shallow sentiments. Here, they simply remind us that if we don’t get everything done today, there is always tomorrow. Simple. Don’t sweat it!
And don’t sweat is a great message, much more helpful than miserable, 20-minute epic song cycles about taking a ring to Mordor…dontcha think?
