Influenced by giants of hard rock like Scorpions, Def Leppard, AC/DC, and Iron Maiden, Gabriel Olteanu shows off in fine style the impact left upon him by these groups on his debut, self-titled EP. Olteanu’s guitar-playing style is highly melodical and refined, and it easily makes this EP worth listening to in itself.
Although only three songs long, Montreal-via-Romania’s Olteanu shows off the competency of his playing on this EP immediately and the flair of Franco V’s vocals only strengthen the case. It’s obvious he has his sights set for the major stadiums and arenas, but, unfortunately, there’s the question of if his sound is dated at all. It’s not his fault, but it’s clear the songs—“My Desire,” “I Want It All,” and “Homeless Nights”—would have been much more at home a few decades ago. The sound is grand and highly polished as songs like “Homeless Nights” build to a roaring chant practically designed to keep the pyrotechnic industry afloat.
Olteanu’s heart is obviously in these recordings 100% and he’s supported not only by a band and a singer that know how to play and sing, but care about these songs just as much as he does. The pure spirit of it all makes up for any flaws whatsoever, and make this EP a compelling listen, especially for a first release.
