Goddamn Wolves - Sugar Twin (GDR-013)

24 January 2026

Okay, here’s a pop quiz, in both senses of the meaning, for you. What connects Hal Blaine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, 60’s girl-groups, and modern indie-rock? I’m sure, if this came up in a quiz, it would take a smart and switched-on cookie to know that all these people, bands, sounds, and styles, in some way, echo out of the new single by Goddamn Wolves.

Well, either a smart and switched-on cookie or someone with the press release in front of them, but this is one occasion when the blurb actually speaks the truth. (Over-zealous PR companies, take note.) Give “Sugar Twin” a spin, and you can clearly hear the nod to “Be My Baby’s” drum pattern, the raucous Phil Spector-esque wall of sound but as channelled by East Kilbride’s belligerent brothers, the tasteful Phillies Records harmonies and the modern, alt-rock fuelled indie groove that holds it all together.

What a triumph, what a brilliant bridge between past glories and future potential, a series of stepping stones that wander from mid-sixties L.A. to modern day Raleigh, North Carolina with stops off in 80’s Scotland and perhaps even a detour through the underground scene of 90’s Boston!

There is nothing much new under the sonic sun, so all you can do is find interesting sounds and styles to mix and merge, and melt and mould into fresh and fascinating new forms. Goddamn Wolves are not only aware of this, but they are also masters of the art form!
