Harry Kappen - The Longing (MTS Records)

5 October 2025

There is an innovative aspect to this new one from Harry Kappen, something that we rarely see in contemporary music writing, and certainly seldom done this well. All too often, the lyrics and the music of a song bear little connection. Generally, the music is just a means of delivering words for people to sing along to, or the lyrics just seem like an afterthought, pleasant sounds that fit the song’s vibe.

However, given that “The Longing” is a song reflecting the eternal battle at the core of the human condition —the struggle between head and heart, logic and emotion, practicality and impulse —it is fitting that the music should also embrace such raging forces. the perfect match of lyrical messaging and sonic engagement.

The song may begin in the realms of a controlled and calming indie sound, but it soon battles against dramatic Zeppelin-esque orchestral swaths and raw and roaring, rock guitars. And it is this ebb and flow between the measured and the muscular, the understated and the anthemic, that causes the sonic drama that makes the song so compelling. The conflict and confusion as such primal forces battle for control are writ large in this stunning and sumptuous sound.

Harry Kappen excels at transforming his own experiences and thoughts into songs that resonate with us all, but this may be his most ambitious and significant song to date. Not only that, it is the perfect incentive for you to go now and check out Four, the album that the song calls home. How could you not, after such a sensational experience? (Rhetorical question, just do it…)
