Head Sound - Home (self-released)

2 September 2024

Although mistakenly marked as Explicit on Spotify, the only thing explicit about “Home,” the new single from Head Sound is that it is explicitly cool, explicitly creative, and explicitly experimental. In fact, the only thing that I find naughty or cheeky about the whole affair is that the song isn’t already invading the mainstream world. That would be great, explicitly great.

As we already know from previous singles, “Optimistic” and “Like A Painting,” it is doubtful that Head Sound’s music will, sadly, find itself in such quarters. But then, without wanting to sound elitist, your average pop picker in that part of the musical landscape wouldn’t understand. (I sounded elitist, didn’t I?)

What I mean is that they probably wouldn’t see the beauty in its drifting dreamscapes, find serenity in its calming sonic waters, or get excited by the way that Head Sound can commit so much music, layers, tones, and textures to this four-or-so-minute sonic canvas and arrange it so that there is so much translucency, clarity, ethereality, and floating grace. I mean, the more discerning ones might get it, but I doubt it.

Even when the band explicitly piles the sounds on, it is the multitudes of fine layers that create the sonic weight, but with each shifting and changing, as different sounds and sonics line up in increasingly new ways, the result is dreamlike, kaleidoscopic, and mesmeric rather than having anything to do with volume or velocity.

Some music feels like an oil painting drawn from bold colors and well-defined lines, but Head Sound is always an experience more akin to marveling at the deftest and most delicate watercolor.
