If you take just the right amount of perfect pop poise, just enough upbeat indie drive, a dash of rock anthemics, and some infectious and brilliantly sing-along-able lyrics, you could just end up with the perfect summer song. I’m assuming that’s what the wonderfully named Plastic Tofu did because they certainly ended up with the said result.
“Sundowner” feels like it could be all things to all people, not in a compromised way, but just because I can’t think of anyone, no matter what their musical inclination and preferred musical tastes, who wouldn’t find lots to love here.
Rockers will love the drive of the song, indie kids will dig the buoyancy, pop pickers will be enthralled by just how immediately the song hooks you in, and even the dance crowd will find themselves throwing some crazy moves to this. They won’t be able to help themselves…and neither will you.
And there also is a wonderful sense of innocence, that late-season, Boys of Summer feeling of youthfulness and nostalgia, a slight feeling of loss and pathos for such times, perhaps, but any listener will undoubtedly understand that this is a song about escapism and optimism, hope and putting the worries of life on hold for a while. Young and old alike. Live in the moment.
Anthemic is a much overused and misunderstood word, but “Sundowner” is certainly a song worthy of such a description.
