Well, it’s a fair question. And yes, thanks, I do, because looking out of the office window into a summer scene of verdant greenery, heat hazy roads, blues skies, and gentle breeze, “Do You Feel Good” feels like a perfect soundtrack for the vista before me. Warm and welcoming, inviting and infectious, louche and languid, music that seems to move with the same sun-beaten stupor as those dragging themselves along the melting pavements outside.
But this is I Am a Rocketship, so things aren’t quite as simple as a soundtrack to summer, no matter how great their take on it might be. The message being carried by this broody music is one of re-invention, a musing on all those who reinvent themselves to mimic Instagram heroes, politicians who rewrite their own back stories to fit the shifting circumstances, and those who believe that a change of image will reset their own personal clock. It looks those people in the eye and asks, after all that effort, are you any happier…do you feel good? And we all know the answer to that one.
If I Am a Rocketship has embraced more direct ways of telling their sonic stories in the past; here, they take a slightly more obscure approach, relying less on facts and more on feelings, the result being a song that makes you feel as well as think, a song for heart and head alike.
It is also a song that reminds us that despite how it may seem, there are still bands out there who wish to explore the darker underbelly of society and hopefully, in the case of “Do You Feel Good”, warn people of the dangers of the not so brave new world that they might be sleepwalking into.
