Indiana Rich - Gemini (Self-Released)

Indiana Rich is an alt pop singer-songwriter based in Boston who recently released her latest album Gemini. Combining a wide variety of influences that range from classics like ABBA to newer artists like Billie Eilish, the album does a fantastic job of bridging retro synths with modern pop stylings. Gemini might also just be the artist’s most personal work yet, dealing with themes close to her heart including her life as a young adult as well as, “Appreciation, healing, and vibrant growth.” There’s an infectious sense of optimism running through the record, but it’s tempered by a true authenticity and pragmatism that prevents anything from becoming too saccharine

The album delicately balances itself between the serious and the playful, with tracks like “When You Say You Love Me” in the former camp and “Just Google It!”, a song about the dangers of searching for your symptoms online when you have health anxiety, is definitely in the latter. Although the songs are specific to Rich’s own experiences, there is a relatability and universality regarding many of the topics. The title track and closer “Gemini” is one of the album’s most beautiful moments and it leaves things with a truly uplifting, hopeful conclusion. In a year where there are a number of emerging names in pop music, Indiana Rich should be placed among them with Gemini as evidence why.
