Sometimes, you are faced with a song that doesn’t fit into any particular sound, style, or scene. Not because it is radically different but because it is woven from all the best bits of all the other genres. The problem isn’t that it doesn’t fit in one particular genre but that, to some degree, it fits in all.
The new single from Janita, “Real Deal,” presents exactly that problem, but on reflection, it is a rather nice problem to be faced with. Depending on what your ear picks up on first affects how you might classify and categorize the song. You might hear its pop accessibility, its robust alt-rock riffs, its dance-infused groove, its digital dexterity, its analog arrangements, its soulfulness, or any number of other flourishes and facets.
And yet, given that all those threads run through it, it is a subtle and supple beast, a silky and sensual set of sonics, music of a mellifluous nature, infectious and surprisingly delicate when it chooses to be. All you need then to make this almost the perfect single, all things to all tastes, is a great vocal, and Janita’s smooth tones and dynamic deliveries are exactly that.
This is my first taste of Janita’s marvelous music; it shan’t be my last.
