You can always rely on Jesse Kinch to deliver the goods. In his particular case, the goods are a blend of classic rock grooves and killer riffs. The last time he crossed my path was with “Night Dancers/Shout It Louder,” a double serving of infectious, fist-in-the-air, singalong rock and roll, and his latest single, “Escape The Shade,” comes from precisely the same place.
This is old-school rock and roll and unashamedly so. But why not? It’s a sound that has endured, a genre that found its perfect form a long time ago and saw no good reason to change.
Jesse doesn’t change a thing; he takes the basic tenets of the form and bends them to his will. Guitar’s riff and raise sonic hell, backbeats and basslines certainly work hard for the cause, and Jesse’s vocals power through providing the vocal hooks and anthemic grandeur, which makes this more than just another rock song. There is even room for a very Doorsian breakdown between the punchy sonic highs.
But it is more than just a cool rock and roll song; lyrically, it is a celebration of the same “go for it” attitude that you find running through all of his music. “Escape the Shade” implores us to follow our dreams, stop hiding in the cool shade of our comfort zones, and reach for the stars.
Why not? What’s the worst that could happen? Well, who knows…and that, dear reader, is the whole point.
