The world is full of breakup songs; in fact, there have probably been as many written as those that are full-on declarations of love. But there is a space between the two, that place where both parties know that the spark has gone, and it is only a matter of time before one of you dares to say that things are over. The silence before the inevitable, the calm before the emotional storm, that place where you can pretend everything is okay but know that it isn’t. That is where we find JK Jerome and his second single, “Any Moment Now.”
And like the place he describes, the music, too, is like a held breath, a blend of the almost clockwork rhythm of the relationship, just going through the motions, and the whispered dialogue between the lovers as they wait for the image to crack. The finger-picked electric guitar sounds almost like a tumbling mandolin cascade; the voices are full of love and regret, care and sadness; and the rest is just atmosphere. Atmosphere that wanders and weaves through every space, wraps around every note, cocoons each word, itself a musical force, a silence that speaks volumes.
A beautiful and beautifully sad piece and a song that will, perhaps, go on to soundtrack many people’s own stories when they find themselves in such painful situations, as we all, inevitably do.
