If you ever wondered what might happen when a group of seasoned, broadly minded music makers from predominantly punk backgrounds came together to make indie music for the modern age, then “Love Conquers All” is the answer and, like “Heavenly In Black” before it, this single sits perfectly under the band’s soundbite of PowerPopPunk!
And if the last time out it was the funky bassline and Stranglers-esque keyboards that were to the fore, here it is: the guitar lines, whether laying out stomping, staccato riffs, or blending buoyancy and bounce with driving energy, that catch the ear first.
It is a song built on moments of sheer infectiousness that reminds us that, as those marvelous mop-tops once told us, all you need is love —a celebration of hippy idealism and open-heartedness….at least until the chorus comes crashing in and punches us in the face with a dose of reality! This is the definition of the phrase, down to earth with a bang. But if the lyrics echo the honesty of the real world, the music is nothing short of a perfectly played and purposefully poised power-pop party.
When you hear the phrase “punk never died,” it might not mean what you think. Forget the bands doing stodgy tributes to a scene that passed away nearly half a century ago; punk survived because of its energy and attitude, its outlook and originality infected the music made around it, and that’s precisely what is going on here, two musical generations later!
