I could sum up “Lightning Returning,” the new single from King In Yellow, in one word. Relentless. But I guess you are looking for a bit more than that, really. But relentless is a good place to start. As is thunderous, energetic, intense, abrasive…actually, I’ll stop there before I use up all my best words and peak too early.
But, unlike most bands who go in for impact built on the twin tenets of volume and velocity, King In Yellow never loses sight of what matters, and between their more cavernous onslaughts, there are some great hooks and riffs. “Lightning Returning” is built on the perfect balancing act between muscle and melody, grit and groove.
It is music that reminds us of many classic sounds of the past, and their music echoes with the same raw spirit and outsiderness that was found in 60’s garage bands, the better end of 70’s punk, the shoegazing and college rock of the 80s and also in 90’s grunge. They seem to sit at the sharp end of a long legacy of honest and authentic music that would rather steer its own course than follow any fashion or fad.
But this isn’t a case of a band merely plagiarising or plundering past glories, and whilst King In Yellow, a great name by the way, might echo with some classic earlier styles, this is the sound of a band picking up that torch and running headlong into a bright new future for alternative music.
